Animal handling is offered if you join up with our educators! The animals are in their own enclosures and are not roaming free. Not all of our animals can come out to say "hi", but many of them can. Join the educators wherever they are on their circular, continuous tours.
Arachnids are not always able to be handled. When they are feeling up to it, you must be 18 years of age or older to hold them.
Accessibility Hour*

*Masks are mandatory during accessibility hour for those 5 years old and older.
Masks are free with admission.

We have a few important rules
- No flash photography
- It scares the bugs!
- No recording the educator
- It scares the Educator!
- Library rules when it comes to mouths, feet, and hands
- No yelling, running or tapping on the glass
- No food or drinks other than water
- The bugs get jealous! (And spills can occur).
Hands on or hands off
There is an educator inside the zoo at all times!
You can join their tour to hold the bugs.
You can also go around by yourself. Keep in mind that you can only hold animals while on the educator's tour.
A tour takes about one hour.
Going on your own journey takes about 20 minutes.
Know about how we keep the Zoo accessible
- There are no large bumps or humps on the floor.
- Wheelchairs of all kinds, including motorized scooters, can enter and fully turn around.
- The shared washroom with Nootka Court is not wheelchair accessible, unfortunately.
- Complimentary Transcribed and Audio tour is available and can be accessed with any smart phone.
- Lighting inside the zoo is dim, but there are some brighter LED lights that have been installed recently.
- The first hour of the day on Wednesday (10-11am) is our accessibility hour. All folks 5 years of age and over must wear a face mask inside the zoo.
Some other notes
- Pets are always welcome in the gift shop, but only service animals can walk around inside the zoo.
- If you can hold your pet or have a bag/stroller for your pet, you can bring them into the zoo.
- You are welcome to bring in your strollers, but if they are not being used, we ask that you park them in the gift shop.
- We have plenty of coat hooks for you to use as we keep the zoo a toasty 25 degrees Celsius.
